METHODOLOGIES

    Two reference methodologies, applied separately.

Altera AI applies Protein Tracker and WWF distinctly to your product data. They measure different things — we never create a hybrid methodology.

    WWF · PLANET-BASED DIETS

    • Food groups
    • Tonnes of product
    • Composites
    • Step 1 / Step 2
    • Assortment trajectory

The WWF methodology measures the overall structure of the food offer sold. It reasons in weight of products sold, split across major food groups, and compares that mix to a healthier, more sustainable food trajectory. Composite products get particular attention.

    PROTEIN TRACKER

    • Animal / plant ratio
    • kg of protein
    • Composite products
    • Protein split
    • Tracking over time

Protein Tracker measures the protein shift. It answers a simple question: what share of the protein you sell comes from plants, and what share from animals? The calculation reasons in kilos of protein: sales volumes, protein content, then the split between animal and plant origin, product by product.

    Comparison

    Two different questions.

    WWF · Planet-Based Diets

    Protein Tracker

    Question asked

Is the food we sell moving toward a healthier, more sustainable diet?

What share of our protein comes from plants vs animals?

    Unit of measurement

    Tonnes of product sold

    Kilos of protein

    Composite products

Classified by total weight (Step 1), then broken down ingredient by ingredient when the recipe is available (Step 2)

Split according to their protein split

    THE COMPOSITE PRODUCT CASE

    • Ready meals
    • Pizzas & sandwiches
    • Recipe breakdown
    • Uncertain cases
    • Human review

Pizzas, sandwiches, ready meals, mixed salads: these products often combine animal and plant protein. They are the hardest to classify and the most decisive for a reliable ratio. Each methodology handles them differently, and Altera AI flags uncertain cases for human review.

    CO-BUILT WITH BOTH METHODOLOGIES

    • Constant contact
    • Latest updates
    • Faithful application
    • Human review
    • Documented exports

Altera AI stays in constant contact with the teams behind Protein Tracker and WWF. The tool tracks the latest updates to each methodology and integrates them as they come, so classifications stay faithful to the reference frameworks and up to date. In practice: deterministic rules on simple cases, AI-assisted classification on the rest, human review of uncertain cases, enrichment through the NEVO reference database and documented exports. A single project can produce both reports, without ever mixing the methodologies.
